Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision Trailer Takes You Inside the Legendary Stud

The official trailer for the forthcoming documentary “Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision,” the history of the iconic New York City recording studio designed by the legendary musician, has been unveiled.
Featuring interviews with Hendrix’s longtime engineer Eddie Kramer (who helped design and build Electric Lady), singer-keyboardist Steve Winwood (who joined Hendrix on the first night of recording at the new studio), bassist Billy Cox and many of the people involved in its construction, the doc tells the story of the studio’s conceptualization and construction, which opened less than a month before Hendrix’s tragic death in September of 1970.

Electric Lady quickly became one of New York’s premiere recording studios and remains one to this day. A small selection of artists who have recorded there includes John Lennon, The Clash, AC/DC, Chic, David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift, whose collaborator Jack Antonoff has recorded there with many other artists.

“The construction of Electric Lady [Studios] was a nightmare,” recalls Kramer in the trailer. “We were always running out of money. Poor Jimi had to go back out on the road, make some money, come back, then we could pay the crew.
“Late in ’69 we just hit a wall financially and the place just shut down,” he continues. “[Hendrix] borrows against his future royalties, and we’re off to the races. [Jimi] would say to me, ‘Hey man, I want some of that purple on the wall, and green over there!’ We would start laughing about it. It was fun. We could make an atmosphere that he felt comfortable in.”
Abramorama has recently acquired global theatrical distribution rights for the film, which was directed by longtime Hendrix historian John McDermott and produced by Janie Hendrix, George Scott and McDermott,
from Experience Hendrix, L.L.C., and will be premiering it on August 9 at Quad Cinema, less than a half mile from the still-thriving Electric Lady Studios.
