Cannes 2024 Portrait Gallery: Hunter Schafer, Kevin Costner, Zoe Saldana and More

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival is underway, with major premieres like “Megalopolis,” “Horizon,” “The Substance,” “Emelia Perez” and more. Check out some of Variety‘s photography from the festival.

The competition title “Emilia Pérez,” Jacques Audiard’s musical about a Mexican cartel boss who undergoes gender-affirming surgery, received a roaring nine-minute standing ovation at its premiere. “I think this movie is about the power of femininity,” Gascón told Variety the day of the film’s debut.

Viola Davis

The EGOT winner will next be seen in “G20,” an action thriller from Patricia Riggen in which the annual summit is besieged by terrorists. Davis is set to play President Taylor Sutton alongside Anthony Anderson and Marsai Martin.
George Lucas

The “Star Wars” mastermind was on hand to receive an honorary Palme d’Or. The latest chapter in the “Indiana Jones” franchise premiered at the festival last year, though Lucas was barely involved in its production — that’s a good thing, since the film flopped.
Willem Dafoe

There’s no such thing as too much Yorgos. Dafoe reunites with his “Poor Things” director on “Kinds of Kindness,” playing both a religious leader and a corporate overlord. The film, which marks Lanthimos’ return to Cannes for the first time since 2017’s “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” examines human beings’ need for control.
