CS Matiang expresses satisfaction with ongoing crackdown on betting companies

- The Interior CS said no country is built on gambling, adding he would not stop until he succeeds in fighting gaming

- Fred Matiang'i expressed satisfaction on the crackdown of betting companies urging Kenyans to join in the mission

- The operation has resulted in the closure of two giant betting firms and a massive loss of jobs

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, on Monday, October 7, conveyed his satisfaction with the ongoing crackdown on betting companies in Kenya.

Speaking to Muslim leaders at the Jamia Mosque, the CS said the battle has not been a walk in the park but he was impressed with the progress made.

He said data showed the crackdown was bearing fruits and he would not stop until he succeeds.

"No country has been built on gambling, and I therefore urge all Kenyans to join in the crackdown," said Matiang'i.

The National Assembly Majority leader Aden Duale who was also in attendance said betting should be banned totally as it was a threat to national security.

The crackdown which began after the government imposed a 20% excise tax on all winnings has since led to the closure of two giant betting companies, Sportpesa and Betin.

Sportpesa let go of over 400 employees in the aftermath of its lost battle with the government.

The betting firms also decried a hostile regulatory environment from the government and reiterated they would resume business if the government softened the working environment.
